 TECHNICIANS AND ASSOCIATE PROFESSIONALS

The aim of the Surveying and Geographic Information Technology (SGIT) course of study is to produce graduates, proficient in the necessary skills to operate as Land Surveying Technicians with Geographic Information Systems Technology competency and to provide matriculation into the Bachelor of Science Surveying and Geographic Information Sciences course of study. Graduates of the Surveying and Geographic Information Technology course of study should have achieved the minimum or higher entry level required by industries throughout Jamaica and the Caribbean. This is achievable since the course of study was formulated using industry standards and requirements.

The curriculum is designed to train students to be functionaries in the main disciplines of Land Surveying (i.e. Plane Surveying, Geodetic Surveying, Engineering Surveying, Topographical Surveying, Photogrammetry, Cadastral Surveying, and Satellite Surveying) and Land/Geographic Information Systems. The course of study aims to provide graduates with a foundation that will enable them to cope with the rapid technological changes that takes place in the land surveying and Geographic Information Sciences environments. Their role will be that of a spatial measurement, data capture and presentation specialist providing supporting functions to the professional Land Surveyor as well as Geographic Information System Managers. The stipulated completion time for this Course of Study is two (2) years.
