This qualification is for persons with technical training in horticulture, with foundational courses in chemistry, biology, and mathematics. It expands to include persons growing range of crops for specialized markets; are limited by land space, and/or land quality; and, have a need to maximize productivity. A distinct advantage is being able to convert a less favourable environment to one conducive to crop production or have a need to produce closer to point of consumption to take advantage of price, timeliness, quality, and quantity of deliveries. The worker must have an enquiring mind, likes to work with plants, enjoys working in a controlled environment, and can tolerate unusual temperatures and humidity in a work environment. The consultations cover a varied scope of work to include design, construction, production, crop protection, and documentation. That aside, innovativeness, observance, and attention to detail are special characteristics leading to success in a hydroponics career.
